HSBMA, Hyundai Motor Group and SK On’s U.S. battery cell production joint venture, starts commercial production of EV battery cells on June 1
The Bartow County facility has an annual production capacity of 35 GWh, enough to support production of approximately 300,000 electric vehicles
Start of production strengthens Hyundai Motor Group and SK On’s localized EV battery supply chain in North America
Kingston, GA., July 17, 2026 - HSBMA (Hyundai-SK Battery Manufacturing America) today announced that it began commercial production at its electric vehicle battery cell plant in Bartow County, Georgia, on June 1.
HSBMA’s start of production marks an important step in supporting Hyundai Motor Group’s electrification strategy and SK On’s battery manufacturing network in North America. The Facility is designed to produce 35GWh of EV battery cells annually, enough to support the production of approximately 300,000 electric vehicles.
Located near Hyundai Motor Group’s major U.S. production sites, including Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) and Kia Georgia, HSBMA is positioned to support a stable and efficient regional battery supply chain. Battery cells produced by HSBMA will be supplied to Hyundai Motor Group’s U.S. manufacturing facilities for Hyundai, Kia and Genesis electric vehicles. The first battery cells produced at the plant will support production of the Hyundai IONIQ 9, Hyundai Motor Company’s flagship three-row electric SUV.
“HSBMA’s start of commercial production reflects the strong collaboration between Hyundai Motor Group and SK On, as well as our shared commitment to building a reliable EV battery supply chain in the United States.” said Hang Ki Moon, CEO of HSBMA. “HSBMA will continue to focus on operational excellence, quality and safety as it supports the growth of electric vehicle production and broader electrification across North America.”
The joint venture was established with a total investment of approximately USD 5 billion, with Hyundai Motor Group and SK On each holding a 50 percent stake. Since the joint venture was announced in 2023, HSBMA has advanced construction, equipment installation and production readiness activities to prepare for commercial operations.
The start of production further supports Hyundai Motor Group’s efforts to expand localized EV production and strengthen its competitiveness in the U.S. market. It also reinforces SK On’s position as a global battery manufacture with a growing U.S. production footprint and long-standing partnerships with leading automakers.
